Important Information for Teen Drivers - Kansas uses a graduated driver license (GDL) process allowing increased driving privileges with age and experience. Teen drivers between the ages of 14 and 17 follow the graduated driver's license process. Teen drivers can obtain their Learner's Permit at the age of 14. Whether taking Driver Ed immediately or not, it is highly recommended that students obtain their Learner's Permit as close to their 14th birthday as possible. Teen drivers need to have their Learner's Permit for one year before they can move on to a Restricted License, and the one year begins the day they get their Learner's Permit. Important note: Any student who fails the written test more than 3 times at the DMV will not be able to take Driver Education for 6 months.
